Parenting
Having
information that helps parents to help their children is not limited to
"time out". What works for one child may not work for
another. Gone are the days of being chased around the clothesline
with a belt or hairbrush! Parenting has come a long way since then,
unfortunately some parents still believe that this is the only way to
discipline their kids & they need resources and kindly teachers to point
them in the right direction ....... ever-so-gently so as not to offend
the parent!
If you have an ADHD child,
or one with a learning disability, the old methods rarely work other
than to influence the child who is being
punished, to be that same kind of parent when they get older. I'm not
saying to let the child get away with wrongdoing, not by a long shot,
rather I am saying to try different methods that empower the
child. These kids need a different method of communication to get the
point across.
Parents and teachers are human too, and lets' face it, these kids can be
exasperating! So in is understandable if you lose your cool every now
and then. But like the children, YOU have to re-frame the way you think
too, and this takes time. (See our
strategies page!)
It is also very important to note that discipline continuity
is essential between
home and school. Having the same set of disciplinary measures set up in
both environments is needed
to help the child and parents ..... and of course the teacher!
On the
support groups page you will find some
links to e-mail support groups that may help with problems you may
experience as a teacher or a parent. If you are a teacher you may join
our
Ed-u-cate E-mail Teachers' Support Group.
Below are some links to websites that may

Children’s Learning. Let's not forget the Dads! This
publication describes research on the benefits of fathers’ involvement
in children’s education, strategies for increasing fathers’
participation, and examples of programs that involve fathers in

to play in a child's upbringing as they are often thought of as the
"provider" and not the "nurturer", which could not be further form the
truth especially in this day of Double Incomes & career mothers.
